Historic Cleveland Theater To Reopen

  • 18 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • Since its opening in 1937, the Texan Theater has used 35mm film to show movies, but the historic theater had to upgrade to a digital format because films will no longer be available in 35mm. Community volunteers started a 'Save the Texan' campaign, which raised $53,000 to help defray some of the cost of the estimated $86,000 upgrade for the 80-year-old owner. The theater will reopen on Jan. 25 with it's first digital movie, 'The Impossible,' at 7 p.m.

Signs of the times: funny local signs

  • 3 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • Traveling through our coverage area, I run across some neat signs. Some of them have misspelled words and others just have a funny message. This week’s photo gallery, titled Signs of the Times, features three signs. The first is an actual sign on display on the entrance of Shepherd City Hall. It reads, “No Shirts, No Shoes, No Pants, No Service.” City officials told me that the sign was installed because they actually had an incident involving a person that entered the building without proper attire. The sign apparently has helped prevent similar incidents from recurring. The second sign is a funny sign from a new Mexican/Chinese restaurant in Shepherd. They are the only place I know of in San Jacinto County that offers Chinese food and it is delicious. Their sign has a taco on the corner that reads, “Bite Me.” I think its some great advice because I love tacos. The owner told me that they should have added an egg roll with the same message since they also serve Chinese food. The last sign is located in Cleveland at a gas station. It advertises check cashing but has a misspelled word in it. ~ Melecio Franco
