Army veteran Staff Sgt. Michael Craven receives a new, mortgage-free home in Pearland, Texas

  • As Americans reflect this week on the great loss our country experienced during the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks on September 11, 2001, we also take a moment to thank our service men and women who work tirelessly to protect our country. A native of Portland, Maine, Staff Sergeant Michael Craven joined the U.S. Army after the September 11 attacks. Thirteen years later, members of the community, Bank of America employees and the Texas Sentinels Foundation will gather to honor Michaelís service and sacrifice to our country and welcome him to his new neighborhood in Pearland, TX as he receives keys to his newly renovated, mortgage-free home. The home is being donated by Bank of America, in partnership with Texas Sentinels Foundation. Michael served in the Army for seven years as a Mortarman. In 2011, he sustained combat injuries that ended his military career while conducting combat dismount operations in Iraq. His unit came under heavy enemy fire and his entire crew was severely injured from the blast. He is the recipient of numerous combat awards, including the Iraqi Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars and is the youngest soldier in the history of the 1st Calvary Division to achieve the rank of Staff Sergeant. Bank of America surpassed its goal to donate 1,000 properties for military service member families and first responders who have housing needs. The bank works closely with Texas Sentinels Foundation and other nonprofit organizations that identify the home recipients and also provide related services, such as financial counseling. Originally envisioned as a three-year program when announced in August 2012, Bank of America reached its 1000th military home donation more than a year ahead of schedule. The bank will continue the program.
